Methodology

In October 2022, we set long-term goals for the project.

  • Thoroughly assess water use, electricity use, carbon use, and waste
  • Develop overall goals for reduction in emissions, water use, and waste
  • Create benchmarks and steps to achieve goals over time
    • Construction policies
    • Purchasing policies
  •  Continuously track emissions, water use, and waste
  • Develop a mechanism to share progress with the EPS community
  • Analyze cost and benefit of all measures
  • Evaluate carbon offsets and discuss level of integration of offsets into EPS

From these goals, we set off to achieve goal number one–assessing the water, electricity, and gas use. We achieved this by analyzing the past 5 years of EPS energy and utility bills and compiling them in a spreadsheet. Our technology has since evolved to automatically track energy use with a software known as EnergyCAP. This is where the data in this website comes from.

In the future, we will be tackling other sources of emissions and setting guidelines to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. Our action thus far has included EBC carbon offsets and the continuous tracking of the school’s environmental footprint.
